Hardwood Floor Care & Maintenance Guide

Keep your floors looking beautiful for decades with these care guidelines from our team.

Daily & Weekly Care

Sweep, dust mop, or vacuum regularly (ensure the vacuum has a "hard floor" setting and the beater bar is turned off) to remove dirt and grit that can scratch the finish.

Clean spills immediately with a dry or slightly damp cloth.

Use only NWFA-approved or manufacturer-recommended hardwood floor cleaners.

Never use steam cleaners, wet mops, or harsh chemicals (like bleach or ammonia) on your hardwood floors.

Controlling Indoor Environment

Wood is a natural material that reacts to its environment. Given our Wisconsin climate, managing humidity is crucial. Aim to keep your indoor humidity between 30% and 50% year-round. Use a humidifier during the dry winter months and air conditioning or a dehumidifier during the humid summers to prevent the wood from cupping, crowning, or gapping.

Winter

Run a humidifier to prevent dry air from shrinking and gapping your floors.

Target: 30–50%

Keep indoor humidity in this range year-round for optimal floor performance.

Summer

Use AC or a dehumidifier to prevent moisture from causing cupping or crowning.

The Refinishing Lifecycle

To maximize the life of your floors and protect your investment, we recommend a professional buff and maintenance coat every 3 to 5 years as needed.

By keeping up with these routine maintenance coats, you protect the wood itself and can easily get 20+ years of life out of your floor before it ever needs a full resand. When the time does come, a solid hardwood floor can be fully sanded and refinished 5 times or more, meaning your floors can truly last a lifetime.

All of our care recommendations align with the strict standards of the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA).
